At House of Neighborly Service, we know that safe, stable housing is more than just a roof over someone's head, it is the foundation for health, dignity, and peace of mind. Recently, our Community Health Workers (CHWs) had the opportunity to help older adults in San Antonio's 78207 community navigate affordable housing opportunities at the new Fishpond Living at Buena Vista Apartments. What began as a housing referral quickly became a powerful example of how advocacy, communication, and personalized support can transform lives. Our Community Health Workers identified individuals with the greatest need and reached out to discuss the opportunity. Through one-on-one conversations, they answered questions, explained the application process, and helped participants determine whether the apartments would be a good fit for their needs. The path to affordable housing can often feel overwhelming, especially when navigating lengthy applications and complex regulations. To help ease that burden, our CHWs scheduled intake appointments with each interested applicant, carefully reviewing required documentation and guiding them through every step of the process. From explaining HUD regulations and applicant responsibilities to helping complete a 65-page application, they ensured that every participant understood what was required and felt supported along the way. Beyond paperwork, our Community Health Workers served as a critical bridge between applicants and property management. For older adults without reliable phone access, they helped facilitate communication, provide updates, and address concerns throughout the process. Their ongoing support helped reduce confusion, improve communication, and ensure applications were completed as accurately as possible. The impact of this work has not gone unnoticed. Property management expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by HNS throughout the application and documentation process, noting how the support helped streamline communication and create a smoother experience for everyone involved. Among the many stories that emerged from this effort, one stands out as a powerful reminder of why this work matters. One older adult, who had been unhoused since the COVID-19 pandemic, recently received approval for housing through this opportunity. After years of uncertainty, he is now preparing to move into a place he can finally call home. Overwhelmed with relief and gratitude, he shared his excitement about having stability once again. His journey with HNS began through a simple community connection. A friend he met while participating in our curbside meal pickup program told him about the services available through House of Neighborly Service. Encouraged by that connection, he remained committed throughout the application process, attending appointments, gathering documentation, and persevering through every step. Today, that perseverance has led to a life-changing outcome. As we look forward to attending the grand opening of Fishpond Living at Buena Vista Apartments, and hopefully celebrating move-in day with one of our newly housed neighbors, we are reminded of the vital role Community Health Workers play in strengthening our community. Through case management, advocacy, communication, and meaningful resource connections, they help bridge gaps in care and create pathways toward stability and independence. Most importantly, they help ensure that our neighbors know they do not have to navigate life's challenges alone.

Volunteers at the Heart of Our Meal Program At House of Neighborly Service, our warm meal distribution program runs on the dedication and compassion of our volunteers. They are the bridge between our kitchen and the senior neighbors in 78207 who count on a friendly face and a nourishing meal each day. In July 2025, we expanded our reach by adding a fourth delivery route, allowing us to remove several seniors from our waiting list. With more meals to deliver, we need more helping hands to keep up with the growing need. We are deeply grateful to the loyal volunteers and staff who pause their busy days to ensure our neighbors are fed and cared for. Every delivery includes more than just a meal—volunteers check in to make sure basic needs are met, often becoming the only source of connection for those who may not see anyone else that day. Celebrating Gabriela’s 100 Volunteer Days This month, we’re proud to recognize Gabriela, a University of Texas at San Antonio student, for completing 100 days of volunteering with us! Gabriela grew up on the Westside and has a special heart for the senior population. She says the smiles, conversations, and heartfelt thanks she receives from seniors are what keep her coming back. Her time with HNS has been just as impactful for her : “I am passionate about working with underserved populations and plan to continue doing so outside of volunteering. I intend to work with underserved populations during medical school and as a physician.” Gabriela’s dedication has not only made an impact on our seniors but has also shaped her future career path. We are so grateful for her service and commitment. Join Us in Making a Difference Our fast-growing meal program is a testament to the needs of our community—and the power of volunteers to meet them. Volunteers commit just 2–3 hours a day (10:30 AM–12:30 PM) to deliver meals or assist with curbside distribution. If you’d like to make a difference in the lives of our senior neighbors, sign up to volunteer at www.hnstoday.org/volunteer. Together, we can create better todays and brighter tomorrows.
